Intersilence (2024)
In August 2024, Kaja created Intersilence, a new work that continues her exploration of graphic scores and synesthesia. The piece encourages performers to pay attention to the spaces between sounds, showing how silence can be just as important and expressive as the music itself.
For this work, Kaja took a new approach by designing the visuals first and then composing the music to match them. She focused more on shapes than colours, using only four colours with different textures.
Circular Overtones (2023)
delves into the mesmerising realm of harmonics and overtone curves. Overtones are additional frequencies that resonate above the fundamental frequency, lending each sound its unique character and colour. Inspired by the vibrational modes of a string, this piece explores the sonic land- scape created by fundamental frequencies and their accompanying overtones. The overtones could be imagined as a spectrum of colours that correspond to the perceived qualities of the sound.
Melodic Breeze (2023)
Melodic Breeze evokes a sense of tranquillity and contemplation, bringing the listeners to a dreamlike world where elements of mist and coldness come alive. The tranquil atmosphere is intermittently interrupted by burns of expressive pizzicato chords.
These interruptions create moments of tension and contrast with the overall calming ambience. The coldness of the composition is conveyed through the subtle use of icy tones and delicate chimes, giving the music a shimmering quality.
Rhythmic Abstractions (2023)
Rhythmic Abstractions explores the fusion of rhythm, articulations and abstract shapes. It captures the essence of music’s rhythmic qualities using shapes, colours and lines.
The artwork aims to evoke a sense of movement, energy, and flow, much like the experience of listening to music and feeling its rhythmic pulse. The composition is divided into three main lines that can be subdivided by the two instruments (violin and cello).
Harmonic Chaos (2023)
Harmonic Chaos begins with a unison motif that gradually starts to disintegrate and evolve into a state of chaos. The intertwining lines that seamlessly blend into each other slowly create a tapestry of dissonant harmony. The composition undergoes three phases, with the third phase being the most intense, culminating in a powerful crescendo chord.
The somewhat soothing colours of the background contrast with the chaotic nature of the intertwining lines in the foreground, representing the beauty of chaos.
Shifting Patterns (2023)
Shifting Patterns explores the transformative power of harmonic arpeggios. As the piece unfolds, the listener is taken on a journey through a gradual and deliberate evolution of chords, leading to a heightened sense of dissonance and musical tension.
Arpeggios, or broken chords, serve as the foundation for the harmonic exploration in this composition. Tonic chords are symbolised by serene green hues, while dominant chords are represented by vibrant shades of orange and red. The intermingling of colours signifies the presence of dissonant chords.
